  • Borna Coric cause a major upset against Kevin Anderson in Indian Wells

"I mean, everybody knows I was really close to quitting tennis before my third surgery on my left wrist", said Del Potro after upsetting world No. 1 Roger Federer 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-2) in Sunday's championship match.

However in the semis, 49th seeded Borna Coric gave Swiss Star a tough challenge, but 20-time Grand Slam victor Federer won the first set with 5-7 and won the second and third set with 6-4, 6-4.

The victory has Federer at 17-0 to start the season, besting the 16-0 start he got off to during his 92-win 2006 season.

"It was an unbelievable match in all ways", del Potro said after ending Federer's 17-match winning streak to start 2018.

The Swiss maestro defeated Borna Coric to set up a showdown with Juan Martin del Potro. Coric, who lost only nine games in his first three matches here and won three-set matches against Taylor Fritz in the fourth round and No. 7 seed Kevin Anderson in the quarterfinals, went after his shots and stuck to his tactics.

Tensions eased slightly into the third set, with neither player able to break the other until Federer capitalised on his second break point on del Potro's fifth service game. On the men's side, the event features Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin del Potro and Marin Cilic. Federer was up against him on that occasion and had not lost at Flushing Meadows for almost six years. Del Potro took six of the first seven points in the tiebreaker, virtually ensuring victory. "I love to play against him", Del Potro said.

The 29-year-old Del Potro, who won the 2009 US Open but has been hampered during by injuries during his career, said at his on-court trophy presentation: "I'm still shaking".

"Most importantly, Juan Martin, well done, you deserved it, you were the better player", he said.

"I had a great week, on and off the court".

Federer's frustration became even more evident in the tiebreak, angrily challenging a del Potro serve - which was eventually ruled in - and exchanging words with Murphy again.

"I think it's more significant maybe (being) world No. 1 at the age that I did it rather than maybe the beginning of the year's start", Federer said recently. This time, some incredible defence from Federer followed by a long volley from Del Potro sealed the set for the Swiss to force a decider.

Another good serve and Del Potro got himself a match point.

The match was played under hard conditions with winds swirling around the main stadium. Federer, on the other hand, had a ideal 12-0 singles record and two titles coming in the action.

In the women's final, Japan's Naomi Osaka routed Daria Kasatkina of Russian Federation 6-3, 6-2 in a matchup of 20-year-old rising stars.
