Freshman Trae Young started the game on fire, going 4-of-4 with 10 points in the first half in just 14 minutes played. Add in some key threes made during the second half and overtime by the likes of E.C. Matthews, Jared Terrell and Fatts Russell, and the Rams have managed yet another first for the program.

Young became the first player in college basketball history to lead the nation in points and assists this season, and is a surefire lottery pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. This game Round one of NCAA Tournament and is very untimely for the Sooners who now hold an 18-13 record. Rhode Island advances to face the victor of Duke/Iona.

But in a game that was tight throughout Oklahoma's perimeter shooting proved costly, as the Sooners shot just 4-for-20 from deep, as No. 7 seed Rhode Island picked up the 83-78 victory in overtime. Oklahoma drops to 18-14 with the loss.

Later, Young's driving basket snapped a four-minute stretch without a field goal for the Sooners, who trailed 64-60. The Sooners have only one senior on their roster.

The Sooners are not taking their second chance for granted, and now they need to take advantage of it after their late season slump.

Rhode Island pulled even at 44 early in the second half on Terrell's long 3. It was their second-lowest total of the season, bettering only their 13.6 percent in a loss at Texas on February 3.

Some have speculated Young might be willing to return for another season. When Young - averaging over 19 shots per game this season - had the ball, the Rams were in his face. Juniors McNeace and Christian James and sophomores Kristian Doolittle and Kameron McGusty will provide the crux of their starters back.
