  • Aus vs SA 2nd Test: AB de Villiers stellar knock puts Proteas in command

Kagiso Rabada put aside his disciplinary concerns to set up a series-levelling win for South Africa on the fourth day of the second Test against Australia at St George's Park on Monday.

Rabada was hit with a grade two for physically shouldering into Steve Smith when he got the Australian captain out in the first innings, and then doubled down to give David Warner a bake to his face in the second dig - attracting a grade one penalty. Overall, however, Australia remain ever so slightly more likely to close out the win - they are 3/1 to claim a 2-1 series scoreline, and 11/4 for 3-1, compared to 5/1 and 8/1 for South Africa to secure the opposite result.

Kagiso Rabada regained his top spot among bowlers crossing the coveted 900-point mark in ratings even as Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin climbed up a couple of notches to be placed fourth in the ICC Test Player Rankings, released yesterday.

Du Plessis also lauded the efforts of Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla, both of whom battled tough conditions on Day II of the Test, building South Africa's platform to take a first-innings lead. Because for me they're not.

"So, I would assume if it was a normal situation, you could say that the contact was very, very minimal".

"I found that there was contact between Rabada and Smith, and in my judgement, the contact by Rabada was inappropriate and deliberate", he said.

"They should just let us play on, the cricket should be the main focus".

"It's going to have to stop".

I'm in the camp of the at least partially neutral Kevin Pietersen: "It's Test cricket".

But SA are considering making a last-gasp legal attempt to try to keep the fast bowler in their XI for the third Test at Newlands in Cape Town, starting on March 22. As the match referee mentioned, there are bigger things at play here, that's why he didn't ban Davey Warner and make it a level three offence because it's a series between two big teams. "But that's where I'm sitting as a player, not as an official". But the last time these nations squared off at that ground, four years ago, Philander had one of the worst games of his career, taking 1-158 as the Aussies hammered the Proteas. "For me it's just about looking at the context of the series, and it's crucial that you have the best players playing".

The South African team said it was considering whether to appeal Rabada's ban.

"How I understand it is, the charge against KG (Kagiso Rabada) is level two with three demerit points and the charge against Dave (David Warner) was a level two with three demerit points".

"[I need to] see it as a big learning curve and not repeat the same mistake ..."

The ICC also announced a 20 percent fine and one demerit point for Australia's Mitchell Marsh, who accepted a charge of using "obscene or offensive language" after being dismissed by Rabada on Monday.
