New Secretary of State Mike Pompeo 'a great friend of Australia': Turnbull

  • Trump's New CIA Director Helped Oversee Controversial Torture Program

He said he also has his doubts about the nomination of CIA Deputy Director Gina Haspel to head the agency, given her background that includes running a "black site" in Thailand in 2002 where extreme interrogation procedures were used, and her admission of destroying video tapes from the program. Tillerson was a lousy steward of the State Department, but he at least spoke for those who believe the U.S.is better advised to work with its allies around the world rather than going its own way. "She will have no illusions about the nature of the Russian state or the KGB-trained autocrat who runs it", said Bennett. "It is unlikely that there is fear for further degradation", Piskov told reporters. "We have a very similar thought process".

Lu said China hopes that the USA "can maintain the positive situation that has recently developed on the Korean peninsula, including the positive desire shown by both the American and North Korean sides for willing, direct talks". Trump was reportedly particularly irked with Tillerson over his negative news coverage, according to the Post.

While Sullivan did not explicitly comment on the firing, he said that he looks forward to meeting Pompeo, and intends to be "expressing the same views and priorities that I previously outlined to Secretary Tillerson".

The surprise announcement came less than a week after the USA president accepted an invitation from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to talks about the regime's denuclearization.

BLOCKED DEAL: Behind the Wall Street drop was Trump's blocking of Singapore-based chipmaker Broadcom's effort to buy Qualcomm, one of the biggest makers of processors that power smartphones and other mobile devices.

On the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, Pompeo has been consistently tough. And there are the refugees - those who either joined the Trump bandwagon late or were never on it in the first place, who held or obtained leading positions elsewhere in the Washington bureaucracy and who have now fled the administration.

Trump also thanked Tillerson for his service. His firing-coincidentally, perhaps-came a day after Tillerson criticized Vladimir Putin and promised repercussions for the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy in the United Kingdom, though the White House says Trump made the decision on Friday: "The White House is insisting the decision to fire Tillerson had been made before his comments Monday evening-that he was informed of the decision in the early-morning hours Saturday, before returning from a trip to Africa".

"I'll be on the committee that will interview him", Kaine said, when asked if that meant he wouldn't vote to confirm Pompeo. "And then we will continue to have discussions about how to achieve that denuclearization".

Not everyone is convinced Pompeo will be better for the State Department or USA diplomacy than Tillerson.

"We were not really thinking the same", said Trump.

"I think it's much better to have intelligence professionals serving in senior intelligence positions".

Trump's impulsive decision to accept an invitation to meet Kim Jong Un by May raises the stakes there dramatically.

"President Trump is determined to prevent that from happening in North Korea", Pompeo told CBS.
