Trump aide fired, under investigation by Secret Service

  • John McEntee special assistant and personal aide follows US President Donald Trump to Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base

President Donald Trump's personal aide is leaving the White House and will rejoin his campaign.

President Trump's personal assistant was let go on Monday - escorted from the White House without being allowed to get his coat, according to reports. He delivered messages to the president at the White House residence, carried markers for Trump to sign autographs, and, most recently, changed clocks at the White House to adjust for daylight saving time.

McEntee was present by Trump's side on a near constant basis. McEntee was escorted from the White House on Monday after he was sacked over security concerns, two sources familiar with the matter told the Journal. The alleged crimes have not yet been revealed.

Mr McEntee was escorted from the White House on Wednesday (AEDT) after news broke the assistant had been denied security clearance. If these two men had background issues serious enough to warrant ejection from the White House now - and the security response to McEntee's termination seems to suggest that in his case - then it's worth asking whether these security issues compromised the president over the last fourteen months of his presidency, too.

It's impossible to speculate what kind of potential financial crimes jettisoned McEntee from the White House, but they must be pretty serious if the Department of Homeland Security is running point on the investigation.

Like Ms Hicks, Mr McEntee was part of a small group of aides that had been with Mr Trump since his campaign. It is not clear why the clearance issue warranted the abrupt removal of Mr McEntee from the White House grounds.

"We don't comment on security clearances or personnel issues", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told CNN in a statement. "We need the help of porven leaders such as Katrina and John to promote the President's growing portfolio of achievements across the country".

Concerns over White House staffers' security clearances have punctuated much of the West Wing news over the past several weeks.
