  • Serena Williams Wins First Comeback Match 14 Months After Welcoming Daughter

23-time women's singles Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams is set to meet her sister Venus in 3rd round of the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells. "Everything is a bonus".

Her victory was made all the more sweet by her being the returning hero at Indian Wells, a venue she and her sister, Venus, had boycotted until as recently as 2015, after reports of racism against their family and that notorious booing by the crowd in 2001, and by the fact that she gave birth in September.

"She's playing really well and just honing her game", said Venus, who watched the Diyas match from the stands. "Too black for my tennis whites", Williams says.

Whether it be her inability to smile during a competition, or her visceral reactions whenever she scores a point, (or oftentimes win) Williams has merited the ire of many in the sports world and online.

The same applies to Williams back on the court after having a baby, or even a Barbie doll being created in the likeness of the British boxing champion Nicola Adams (albeit one that doesn't look like it would stand up to being tickled, never mind punched). "She's only 18 years old".

2017 ATP World Finals victor Grigor Dimitrov was stunned by Spain's Fernando Verdasco 6-7, 6-4, 3-6 to bow out. "It definitely wasn't easy but it was good". "We can always stay in the tournament longer if the both of us are in the tournament".

The second was equally hard fought, the duo trading two breaks each before Williams got a third crucial break at 5-5. Bertens would rue her missed opportunities, especially after several unforced errors which saw Williams take a commanding lead. She was already eight weeks pregnant at that time. Bertens is a risky if erratic opponent, quite capable of handling Williams's power and providing plenty of her own.

She fell behind 3-1 early in the second set but rallied by holding serve in the fifth game.

Serena, 36 and vying to become the first woman to win three Indian Wells titles, clinched the victory against Bertens on her second match point when Bertens blasted a forehand wide.

"I'm really happy that I won this first-round match".

But all-Williams matches have never been exclusively about the tennis or the tactics. "I would prefer to play someone else, anybody else, literally anybody else, but it has to happen now". "Just have to go out there and see how I am and do my best".
