  • Newcastle fans rush to praise star midfielder after Southampton win – 'Rolls Royce'

Southampton sacked Mauricio Pellegrino last night in a desperate attempt to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Saints have already begun the search for his successor and it is believed that they hope to make an appointment before Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final against Wigan Athletic.

The club also conirmed that Pellegrino's backroom staff would be following the Argentinian through the exit door.

However, the former Liverpool defender failed to impress, winning just eight of his 34 games in charge, and he now leaves with a 23.5% win rate having been sacked in the aftermath of Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Southampton.

And Southampton have now chose to act with the team sitting 17th, just one point above the drop zone with eight games to go.

They have scored 29 goals in 30 games, winning only five of them - and have just one win in their past 17 league games.

The Saints now languish in 17th position in the Premier League after suffering a 3-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday.

Assistant coaches Carlos Compagnucci and Xavier Tamarit have also left the club. "They will go for it, and change managers, even at this time". 'We would like to place on record our thanks to Mauricio, Carlos and Xavier for their efforts during their time with Southampton, and wish them well for the future. The match was billed as a crucial encounter in the relegation battle but Saints performed poorly and were easily beaten by Rafa Benitez's side, and afterwards Pellegrino admitted his players "gave up" after falling behind. "I haven't seen my team compete in this way this season without the spirit you need to compete at this level." .

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live, former Southampton star Francis Benali said: 'It is something that has been bubbling away and has been talked about by Southampton fans for a while.
