The 12-time major victor led 5-2 in the opener, but Daniel fought back well to clinch the first set on a tie-break, and although Djokovic pulled level, 61 unforced errors from the five-time champion saw Daniel clinch victory after two-and-a-half hours.

Roger Federer insists he is taking nothing for granted after moving a step closer to a sixth Indian Wells title in California.

Federer returned to stadium court on Sunday afternoon and needed an hour to finish off his second round victory 6-3, 7-6 (8/6).

The American-born Japanese player won the first set on a tie-breaker, before losing the second set 6-4 to Djokovic.

The defending champion will face Serbia's Filip Krajinovic in the round of 32. He is making a cautious return to the ATP Tour after stopping his 2017 season following Wimbledon, due to a right elbow injury.

Is there really any reason to believe that Roger Federer won't be the last man standing when the championship trophies are handed out Sunday at Indian Wells? "Just struggled also a little bit with the health the last couple of weeks", said Djokovic, who appears to be dealing with the flu.

He extended his 2018 win streak to 13 matches and has only dropped three sets from 34 played this year. "Very weird", Djokovic said.

He was uncharacteristically sloppy - as in 40 unforced errors sloppy.

Marin Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion who lost to Federer in the final of this year's Australian Open, eased to a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Marton Fucsovics. The surface doesn't react so much; the ball doesn't travel so fast.

"I was feeling like he was not loving my slice and I was also mixing in drop shots", said Federer who extended his ideal record this season to 14-0.

"So I'm on a good run right now, and I try to maintain that, and you only maintain that if you respect every opponent".

"Just the feeling of getting back to the world No. 1 ranking is deeply gratifying".

Other seeded players who lost were ninth-seeded Lucas Pouille, who fell 6-4, 6-4 to Yuki Bhambri; 14th-seeded Diego Schwartzman, 7-5, 6-4 to Marcos Baghdatis; 21st-seeded Kyle Edmund, 6-4, 6-4 to Dudi Sela; and number 24 seed Giles Muller, 6-3, 7-5 to Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
