  • US Education Secretary Betsy De Vos said she will chair a federal commission on school safety

Earlier this week, CBS' "60 Minutes" grilled Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on why she supports the idea that families like the Richardsons should be able to choose where and how their children learn. Interviews with DeVos broadcast Sunday night and Monday morning by CBS and NBC show that she's performing below grade level in all subjects - and her deviation below the mean is anything but standard.

"Dear President Trump, if you want to meet someone who has an actual IQ problem (as opposed to just being black), meet your Education Secretary Betsy DeVos", Huffman tweeted.

This is the case in DeVos' home state of MI, where the public school system has been ravaged by school choice. Where you had a huge impact and influence over the direction of the school system here.

"I have not", DeVos confessed.

In perhaps the most ridiculed segment of her Sunday evening "60 Minutes" interview, DeVos admitted that she does not "intentionally" visit underperforming schools, and said she didn't know if the school choice movement in MI has improved school performance, despite clear evidence that the schools have declined in recent years.

In an interview with Lesley Stahl, DeVos couldn't actually say whether the number of rapes or sexual assaults on school campuses was the same as the number of false accusations, which was the basis for her decision to repeal Obama-era Title IX guidelines for how schools should handle sexual assault allegations.

DeVos was back on television Monday, on a few different channels, talking about a new role President Trump has given her: leading a commission on school safety.

"Maybe I should", DeVos said. And when Stahl redirected, DeVos talked right over her. Stahl countered, pointing out that public-school test results have gone up in the past 25 years.

And don't make things worse by trying to claim that there are "lots of pockets" where things are going well.

The administration also confirmed Trump's support for a congressional measure known as Fix NICS, which helps local officials improve efforts to enter data into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and the congressional STOP School Violence Act, which enhances school security and affords some subsidy for such efforts.

DeVos' critics said the interview reinforced why the West Michigan native is unqualified for her job, while the Associated Press reported that the segment received a "less than ringing endorsement" from the White House. Betsy DeVos: I couldn't believe it when I read it, but you have to admire their candor.

Research on private school options found that students that chose a private school were more likely to finish high school and even enter college than their peers in traditional schools. But I think there are a lot of really powerful forces allied against change.

You are not misunderstood, Secretary DeVos.

The DeVos interview has already sent a message that schools can be less mindful of stark disciplinary disparities.

Yes, and brains are made up of individual brain cells, many of which self-destruct upon hearing DeVos speak. I don't know. But I'm committed to a process that's fair for everyone involved. "DeVos is an embarrassment to responsible education choice and reform movements". What she also did, though, was pull those kids out of their public school and send them to private ones instead.

When Stahl asked outright whether teachers should have guns in classrooms, DeVos offered a noncommittal answer.
