British comic titan, Ken Dodd, dead at 90

Instantly recognizable for his unruly mop of hair and snaggletoothed grin, Dodd came up through the hardscrabble ranks of Britain's variety circuit, where performers kept demanding crowds entertained with songs, a bit of dance and a slew of jokes.

Over the 1960s, he entered the Guinness Book of Records for the longest joke-telling session ever - 1,500 jokes in three-and-a-half hours.

The first programme the Liverpool comic signed for her was back in 1958 and she added: "He has signed the same one since, as well as numerous other programmes bought at show after show".

"To my mind, he was one of the last music hall greats" Holmes summed up.

He tweeted: "So sorry to hear we have lost Ken Dodd.I met him once and I've never forgotten it.Gawd bless 'im".

Dodd's success drew the interest of the taxman, and in 1989 he endured a five-week trial accused of fraud.

And on Channel 5 at 9pm, Terror in the Air is replaced by Ken Dodd: In His Own Words, a documentary about his career featuring an interview with Dodd and contributions from Michael Billington, Miriam Margolyes, Ricky Tomlinson, Roy Hudd, John Birt, Michael Grade and Tim Vine. He gave his final performance in Liverpool at the end of December.

The flags at the Town Hall, St George's Hall, Cunard Building and Central Library will fly at half-mast as a mark of respect.

Fans had left flowers and tickling sticks in tribute outside his home, where his wife spoke to reporters.

She said: 'He got the big send-off when he was alive at his 90th birthday party.

'He passed away in the home that he was born in over 90 years ago.

He also had a successful career on television and radio with shows such as The Ken Dodd Show, Beyond Our Ken and Ken Dodd's Laughter Show, and even topped the charts as a singer ("Tears"), releasing his signature tune, "Happiness", in 1964.

Ken Dodd, the legendary comedy king, has died on March 11 in the Knotty Ash home where he was also born and got married just two days before his death. "Entertainer" by Wiltshire artist David Cobley.
