Venus beats Serena at Indian Wells

  • Venus and Serena Williams

Venus and Serena have faced each other 28 times in their legendary careers and they are now meeting in Serena's first tournament back on the WTA Tour since she beat Venus 6-4, 6-4 in the 2017 Australian Open final.

"Everything is a bonus", said Serena after winning in one hour, 52 minutes on her second match point.

It was the first meeting between the sisters since they clashed in the final of the 2017 Australian Open, which Serena won before taking a 15-month hiatus due to her pregnancy. Serena held to trail 5-4 with an ace and a clean victor.

Venus Williams (R) of the USA hugs her sister Serena Williams (L) of the USA after defeating her in their match at the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, USA, 12 March 2018. I'm not where I'm going to be, but I'll get there eventually...

Typically, the sisters wouldn't meet until the later rounds of a tournament.

The sisters have often said the other tennis playing sibling is their toughest opponent.

"It never crossed my mind, " Venus said.

Richard Williams said he heard racial slurs from the crowd and he paused to shake his fist at them.

Serena subsequently stayed away from Indian Wells until 2015, while Venus didn't return until one year later. Serena Williams, however, is back on court after surviving a post-natal ordeal, which she said nearly took her life away.

Next up for Wozniacki is Russian 20th seed Daria Kasatkina, who recorded a routine 6-4 6-3 win over US Open champion Sloane Stephens.

"I managed to get my feet going more, and managed to start playing more steady, and that paid off". "There's always next week and the week after". After that, she's lost all three matches to Serena - including last year's Australian Open final. But, after two straight-set wins at Indian Wells, a highly-anticipated and hoped-for showdown is happening.

When Serena Williams played in that year's tournament final - which she won - she was booed throughout the match. She won in the desert in 2011 and has been runner-up twice.

Fourth seed Elina Svitolina fell to Carla Suarez Navarro 7-5 6-3. Also losing was No. 12 Julia Goerges of Germany, 6-3, 6-3 to No. 21 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.

In other women's third round matches on Monday, French seventh seed Caroline Garcia defeated Australia's Daria Gavrilova 7-5, 6-4. It definitely felt better than the first round, but, I mean, I'm still a little rusty.
