Trudeau to kick off tour of steel and aluminum factories in Quebec

  • Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters Saturday that he was “very pleased” President Trump confirmed new US tariffs of steel and aluminum would not apply to Australia

The EU is seeking to be exempted from planned U.S. import duties of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium, but says Washington has not made clear how the exemption process works.

Trump in a tweet provoked the Europeans still further on Monday saying his Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross would speak with the EU side "about eliminating the large tariffs and barriers they use against the United States of America".

The White House said in a statement Monday evening that Trudeau and Trump had spoken by phone regarding the steel and aluminum tariff announcement from last week.

This form of processing allows it to be stamped "made in Canada" and could avoid the USA tariff, which is why the federal enforcement officials will need to identify the country of origin of the original steel, said one industry executive who asked that his name not be used because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

"Two economic and trade blocs as great as the United States and the European Union can in no way see the conflict escalate", he added.

Freeland notes the written presidential proclamation putting them in place does not.

The steel and aluminum industries did not need these tariffs to be more competitive globally, because they were already made more competitive thanks to the recently enacted Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA).

"That was significant and we were glad to see that", she said.

Canada is the No. 1 supplier of both metals to the U.S. It represents about 41 percent of aluminum imports and 16 percent of steel imports.

However Trump specifically mentioned NAFTA in his press conference announcing the exemptions on March 8.

On Friday China's Commerce Ministry official Wang Hejun stated that Beijing will take "firm actions" if the tariffs inflict losses on Chinese businesses. Mexican federal elections scheduled for July 1 and USA congressional elections in the fall are adding pressure, as changes of government as a result of either could affect both getting a deal and getting it ratified. Indeed, most European Union countries are in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the world's biggest security alliance, together with the U.S.

Following the close of the seventh round of negotiations last week in Mexico, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said the U.S. wants to get a deal done in the next four to six weeks. But both Mexico and Canada have rejected Trump's linkage of the levies to the ongoing NAFTA talks. From there, she may travel to Washington, D.C.to continue NAFTA talks although her spokesman would only say her schedule is still being finalized.

On Monday, Trudeau started a four-day tour of Canada's steel and aluminum towns with a stop at a Rio Tinto aluminum production facility in Quebec's Saguenay region. Marie, Ont., and Regina.
