  • Plane crash in Kathmandu

The airline is based in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, and flies domestically and internationally.

A police spokesperson told the BBC that 22 people are being treated in the hospital for injuries.

The airport's general manager told reporters Monday that the pilot did not follow the control tower's instructions and approached the runway from the wrong direction.

"Our ATC permitted the aircraft to land from the southern side of the runway but it changed its route and attempted to land from the northern side", said Chettri.

"There is some plain land on the left side of the runway but on the right side there is a deep gorge, so if the plane skids off the runway then it will fall into the gorge".

All flights to and from Tribhuvan International Airport have been cancelled.

Citing a tourism ministry official, The Kathmandu Post reports, "25 injured passengers have been rescued and sent to different hospitals for treatment".

"The plane which crashed in Kathmandu had no prior technical problems".

The plane was carrying 67 passengers and four crew.

"There are reasons why Nepal has such a relatively high accident rate, many of those are because of the challenges of operating in mountain airfields that surround Nepal", said Blackie, who was part of an team that probed a 2016 crash of a small turboprop plane in Nepal.

Asif said the airline suspected that the crash was caused by "a miscommunication" between the pilot and the control tower at the airport.

"After hearing ATC [air traffic control] conversation, we assume that that there was no negligence by our pilots".

A spokesman for the US-Bangla Airlines said a Chinese national was among the passengers of the plane that crashed in Nepal on Monday.

In the meantime, the Nepalese Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has assured an immediate investigation.

Relatives of some of the passengers gathered in front of US-Bangla Airlines office at Dhaka's Baridhara district, demanding to know what happened to their family members.

In March 2015, a Turkish Airlines flight crash-landed at Nepal's only global airport with no casualties.

After a normal take-off from Dhaka, the plane had begun to behave strangely as it approached Kathmandu, he said. The aircraft was 17 years old.

In May, 2012, Agni Air's Dornier 228-212 (9N-AIG) crashed near Jomsom Airport in Mustang, killing 15 people.

US-Bangla Airlines is a unit of the US-Bangla Group, a U.S. Bangladeshi joint venture company.
