  • Vedas could help fight climate change says PM Narendra Modi at first meet of global solar alliance

The NDB and the ISA agreed to consider a roadmap for the mobilisation of financing to promote solar energy in countries of common interest and to explore mechanisms for supporting solar energy development.

On Sunday, both India and France took additional steps to further their ambitions of mitigating the effects of global warming at the Founding Conference of the International Solar Alliance, reported The Hindu.

To this end, and in keeping with Ghana's commitments under the Paris Agreement, the President outlined some solar energy programmes for implementation by 2030, which include the attainment of utility-scale solar electricity from about 22.5 megawatts to 250 megawatts.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi said advanced and affordable technology is needed to deliver solar energy around the world.

They have also made a decision to leverage and emphasise the key characteristics and strengths of solar energy in their national energy plans and strategies and to assist through the implementation of solar strategies.

Macron said the countries at ISA represent three-fourths of the world population.

Referring to a group of rural women solar engineers "solar mamas" who had performed earlier, Macron said: "Our solar mamas, we just listened to, didn't wait for us".

Adding to this External Affairs Secretary (Economic Relations) T S Tirumurthi said, "All of them (US and China) have taken part very actively in the steering committee proceedings".

Although it did not provide a full list of what they were, they included a water project for Suez, and the signing of an "industrial way forward agreement" between EDF and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India.

Both Macron and Modi have doubled down on their climate efforts in response to Trump's decision to pull the USA out of the 2015 Paris agreement.

"Because they decided it was good for them, for their children, their grandchildren".

The ISA is open to 121 prospective member countries, majority located between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn as this is the region worldwide with a surplus of bright sunlight for most of the year.

But on Saturday, India said that membership of the body will be thrown open to all countries that want to join, with no criteria such as duration of sunlight and geographical location.

According to the organisation, out of 60 member countries; 30 have countries have signed and ratified the ISA Framework Agreement up to date. India also aims to achieve 40% installed power capacity from renewable energy by 2030.

Other countries also unveiled plans to have substantial share of renewables like solar and wind power in their energy mix and hailed the ISA, which would help to reduce carbon foot print in the coming days in view of climate change.

Macron applauded India's efforts in expanding renewable energy capacity within two years, from 39GW to 63GW, with solar energy growing up by 140%.

Ahead of Sunday's conference, the European Investment Bank announced it was providing €1 billion as support for the International Solar Alliance.
