  • Report: Jake Arrieta Nearing Deal With Phillies

He became the odd man out with the Cubs after the team signed Yu Darvish to a long-term deal in February, then needed to wait until just weeks before the start of the season to secure a job. It naturally did not happen.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Phillies' contract with Jake Arrieta includes an opt-out clause after the second season.

The Phillies made moves to bolster their bullpen in the offseason. During the 2015 season when the Cubs won the World Series and Arrieta earned the NL Cy Young Award, the dominant pitcher fanned 236 batters. He was 14-10 with a 3.53 ERA previous year. USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported the news. If their young starters can take step forward this season, the Phillies could make waves in the wild card standings. The club already surrendered their second-highest pick, plus $500,000 in global signing bonus money, when it signed Carlos Santana to a three-year, $60 million contract in December.

The 32-year-old righty was among several top free agents who didn't get a deal for six or seven years in a changing off-season market.

But until Sunday, the Phillies had not added a veteran starting pitcher to a rotation that cried out for one.

As Ashley mentioned earlier, Arrieta was expected to sign with a team this week as free agent dominoes finally begin to fall. Yes and no. The name of Jake Arrieta alone will generate buzz and excitement in Philly, no doubt causing attendance to spike every-fifth-day. The Phillies have long made it clear that length of deal is more of a concern with them than money.
