Russian ex-spy, daughter still critical

  • Theresa May branded an attempt to kill a Russian double agent with a nerve agent an'appalling and reckless crime

Speaking after meeting Wiltshire Police Temporary Chief Constable Kier Pritchard in Salisbury, Ms Rudd said: 'Still very serious for the two people who were indeed the subject of this outrageous attack and for the police officer, I understand it's still serious, although he's still conversing and engaging'.

In an update to parliament yesterday, Rudd said that the individuals remain unconscious and "in a critical but stable condition".

She said: "The use of a nerve agent on United Kingdom soil is a brazen and reckless act".

DS Bailey attended the bench where the pair, aged 66 and 33, were slumped and later reportedly went to Mr Skripal's house. However, British Foreign Secretary urged "not to jump to conclusions".

Almost a week has passed since father and daughter were found unconscious on a public bench in Salisbury in southern England last Sunday. The suggestion is now Mr Skripal and his daughter were poisoned at home. "He wants to say that he does not consider himself a "hero", he states he was merely doing his job - a job he loves and is immensely proud of - just like all of his other dedicated colleagues do, day in-day out, in order to protect the public and keep people safe".

Authorities cordoned off Skripal's house, a auto, a restaurant, a pub and the cemetery where Skripal's wife, Lyudmila, is buried and where there is also a memorial headstone for his son, Alexander.

About 180 members of the armed forces, including chemical warfare experts, are now on the ground in Salisbury helping Scotland Yard's anti-terrorism unit in the investigation. Skripal's wife, Liudmila, died of cancer at 60, in 2012. Alexander died previous year at the age of 43.

British authorities have not yet revealed what substance was used to threaten the lives of the former Russian spy and his daughter.

The sight of the soldiers, and forensic experts in bright yellow hazmat suits, added to the increasingly surreal scenes in a city best known for its towering medieval cathedral and its proximity to the ancient Stonehenge monument.

At the hospital where the Skripals were being treated another team used an army truck to remove a police auto.

The nerve agent used in the attack was identified in scientific tests by Government experts earlier this week but it has yet to be named publicly.

Britain's home secretary and government ministers held an emergency meeting Saturday as investigators probe the attempt to kill a former Russian double agent and his daughter using a rare nerve agent.

Authorities are racing to find the source of the nerve agent used against 66-year-old Skripal, who came to Britain in 2010 as part of a spy swap, as politicians warned it bore the hallmarks of an attack by Russian Federation. In 2010, he was released from prison and sent to Britain as part of a spy exchange with Western agencies.

The attack has been likened to the assassination of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko, a critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who died in London in 2006 after drinking green tea laced with radioactive polonium-210.

Authorities say there is no risk to the general public from the attack.

Commenting on the issue, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin had no information on what could have caused the incident and noted that Moscow was open for cooperation.
