One of those conversations was with White House counsel Don McGhan, whom Trump reportedly urged to issue a statement denying the president had asked him to order Mueller's dismissal.

Trump has denied that repeatedly, and vociferously.

The second reported interaction was with former chief of staff Reince Priebus.

President Trump's lawyers hope to strike a deal with special counsel Robert Mueller in which the president will submit to an interview to speed the conclusion of Mueller's investigation into Russian election meddling, a new report said Friday. "Any prosecutor would see them as potential overt acts in a conspiracy to obstruct justice".

The Journal reports that Trump lawyers expect any questions for the president to focus on the firings of former FBI Director James ComeyJames Brien ComeyDopey Russian ads didn't swing voters - federal coverups did Assessing Trump's impeachment odds through a historic lens Drama surrounding Shulkin - what is the future of VA health care? The lawyers believe Mueller will mostly focus on whether Trump obstructed justice by firing ex-FBI Director James Comey, who was actively overseeing an investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation when he was booted. "There is no obstruction whatsoever", Trump told reporters at the time.

In other words, if the three sources who gave the Times its scoop are right, Trump might be making matters worse for himself without knowing it.

During their conversation, Trump asked Priebus if the special counsel's team had been "nice" and if he was treated fairly, according to the source.

A witness cooperating with Mueller has told investigators the meeting was set up in advance so that a representative of the Trump transition could meet with an emissary from Moscow to discuss future relations between the countries, according to the people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters.

Mr Trump was said to have accused Mr Mueller of having conflicts of interest with the investigation and instructed Mr McGahn to request his dismissal.

Comey says he was sacked after Trump asked him to back off a Justice Department investigation into Flynn.
