  • Decision on Whether to Break Alliance With BJP Will Be Taken Soon: TDP MP

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed Telugu Desam Party (TDP) ministers Ashok Gajapathi Raju and YS Chowdhary to resign as Union Ministers.

The TDP took the "painful decision in the interest of the state" as it was left with "no other option", party chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said at an emergency press briefing. This was made amply clear by Finance Minister Arun Jaitely who reiterated the Centre's commitment to the state.

He said the state had asked for loans through NABARD instead of external agencies such as the World Bank or Asian Development Bank. "That is why we took the decision of withdrawing our ministers", the chief minister said.

He has cleverly used the line from his upcoming movie "Bharat Ane Nenu" to express his displeasure over Modi government's cold response to the special status demand.

The only benefit that remained for a "special category state" was the benefit of assistance for externally aided projects (90 percent grant from Centre). The centre is not fulfilling the promises it made.

He explained that the BJP backed the special category status at the time of state bifurcation because there was a provision for it at that time, "but later the 14th Finance Commission recommended that no state will be given special status, so we are following that recommendation". They staged a protest by holding placards demanding Special Category Status to the State on the premises of Parliament.

He later tweeted that a united Opposition can force the Centre "to do justice to the people of Andhra Pradesh". "As that objective has failed, we're calling back our leaders", said the AP CM. The 14th Financial Commission said no special status, but we chose to compensate the revenue deficit for a certain period.

Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed frequent disruptions and adjournments as parliamentarians from Andhra Pradesh demanded special status for the State, which was bifurcated to carve out the state of Telangana under the second term of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre.

Jaitely added that by one calculation, the state would have got Rs 4,000 crores of which the Centre has paid all but Rs 138 crore for 22 months.

In discussions between the Union Expenditure Secretary and State government officials on February 6 and 7, it was decided that the higher allocation through NABARD to Andhra Pradesh would be routed through a special goal vehicle.
