Nashville Mayor Megan Barry, who grew up in Overland Park, has agreed to step down amid controversy over an affair with her bodyguard.

Barry's political career was abruptly upended on January 31, when she admitted to engaging in an affair with Forrest, the head of her security detail and a 31-year officer on the Metro Nashville Police force.

In addition to her resignation and probation, Barry also must pay $11,000 in restitution.

The Nashville district attorney said in court on Tuesday morning that evidence would show Barry's affair cost the city between $10,000 and $60,000 in unlawful spending. One example includes Forrest receiving a six-figure salary from overtime that he earned while spending extra hours with Barry.

Authorities found two nude or partially nude photos of a woman that were taken by Forrest's phone while he was on duty. In her statement at the morning press conference, the mayor thanked all her supporters and staff who supported her during the many "difficult" months.

The Democratic Barry is the city's first mayor in almost a century to leave office before the end of their term.

Barry, who took office in 2015, was a liberal darling, with a Vanderbilt University poll showing her approval rating at 61 percent even after admitting to the affair.

Barry has not said when the affair ended, only that it's over.

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry, the now-former mayor of Nashville, pleaded guilty in Davidson County court on Tuesday, March 6, to felony theft charges. Both Barry and Forrest were married at the time. Barry travelled alone with Forrest on nine of the trips, including one to Greece in September, according to the newspaper.

Barry stunned the city in late January when she confessed to the extramarital relationship, which began in spring 2016 and continued as her popularity and accomplishments grew.

Forrest's overtime pay more than doubled from 2014-15 to the 2016-17 budget year, according to Metro Nashville Police records. Some Democrats referred to the mayor as a rising star in politics.

Forrest had worked as security detail for Nashville mayors as far back as 1999.

Barry made headlines last year after she revealed that her 22-year-old son had died from an opioid drug overdose in July 2017. She denied breaking the law, rebuffed calls for her resignation, and said her husband remained committed to their marriage.
