The upcoming noise-canceling headphones will reportedly launch as early as the end of this year but could be facing development problems that would force it back into 2019.

There are plans to release the headphones as early as the end of this year, though challenges with development could delay the release, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

Apple has not released AirPods' exact sales numbers; the product has been lumped in with Apple Watch and other products in the "Other Sales" category. The company's largest ever acquisition was the $3 billion purchase of Beats in 2014-a deal that got Apple into high-end headphones and music streaming. The possibility that Apple might redesign the headphones again before launch hasn't been ruled out.

AirPods have seemingly been a big success story for Apple.

Apple to launch self-branded premium headphones by 2018-end: Report

The report suggests Apple will repeat its strategy with the HomePod in terms of its pricing and target market, with the new headphones from the company priced to match similar high-end audio gadgets from Bose and even the company's own Beats line. A recent Bloomberg report indicated that the upgraded Apple AirPods will be released this year and come equipped with a new wireless chip that will allow you to summon Siri by talking to the AirPods, making the interaction hands-free.

According to the latest statistic, companies like Beats, Bose, Sennheiser, Sony and Skullcandy are the leading players in a headphone market that will generate $20 billion in annual revenue by 2023, almost doubling this year's projected sales, according to Research and Markets.

Apple's headphone ambitions put it in a collision course with already-popular brands like Sony, Samsung, and Sony - and Apple's own Beats by Dre.

Beats, Bose, Sennheiser, Sony and Skullcandy are the leading players in a headphone market that will generate $20 billion in annual revenue by 2023, almost doubling this year's projected sales, according to Research and Markets. It's worth noting that numerous current top options in the wireless noise-cancelling market are pricey as well, though: Bose's QuietComfort 35 go for $350, while Sennheiser's HD1 Wireless initially retailed for $500. The Apple headphones will likely use similar audio technology, driving up costs.
