Kiril Kaprizov's power-play goal 9 minutes, 40 seconds into overtime gave the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation team the gold medal in men's hockey Sunday with a 4-3 victory over Germany.

As the Olympic anthem played for their medal ceremony, the players joined hundreds of spectators in belting out the Russian anthem. Let's not forget Russian Federation - or, we should say, "Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation", the shame-laced moniker they inherited after a doping brouhaha from the 2014 Sochi Games doomed them to a non-flag-carrying Pyeongchang Games.

On Sunday, the International Olympic Committee rejected a late appeal from Russian Federation to be reinstated prior to the close of the PyeongChang Games after being banned for a doping scandal in Sochi. Russia's national emblems were prohibited from being displayed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which disqualified Russian Federation from the 2018 Winter Olympics for alleged doping violations. The fans drowned out the Olympic anthem with the singing of their own Russian anthem, and the players followed suit.

Germany, which was playing in the men's hockey final for the first time in the country's history, thought it had secured victory when Jonas Mueller scored with 3:16 remaining in regular time to put the Germans ahead 3-2.

"It means a lot". But it could. That could be said about pretty much anything at an Olympic Games, inside the rings and out.

The game was a thriller from the start and ended with flair, a ideal one-time slap shot from Kaprizov that ripped past German goaltender Danny aus den Birken with Germany's Patrick Reimer off for high sticking.

Away from the politics, humanity's most extraordinary feats of winter athletic prowess unfolded, revealing the expected triumphs but also stars most unlikely - from favorites like Mikaela Shiffrin, Shaun White and Lindsey Vonn to sudden surprise legends like Czech skier-snowboarder Ester Ledecka and the medal-grabbing "Garlic Girls", South Korea's hometown curling favorites.

Kirill Kaprizov scored the winning goal in the February 25 final after OAR sent the game into extra time by equalizing in the final minute of regulation. Gusev finished as the Olympic tournament's points leader with four goals and eight assists.

The Germans won silver, their best finish ever in Olympic ice hockey.

"Absolutely (this was our Miracle on Ice), once in a lifetime", said German coach Marco Sturm.

The Germans had punched above their weight to get to the final, beating hockey powerhouses Sweden and Canada, and they were not about to quit with the gold medal on the line. But here we are.

"The boys are going to bring silver home and they should be very proud of it".
