  • How Marcus Peters trade impacts Chiefs Rams NFL free agency

Immediately after it was reported that Peters would in fact land with the Rams, other reports suggested that the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers were also in on acquiring the All-Pro corner from Kansas City.

ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the news. He is coming off a five-interception season that also saw the former first-round pick suspended for a game.

Peters drew a penalty after throwing an official's flag into the stands and walking off the field following a disagreement with a call late in the game against the Jets on December 3. Hunt has also met with Peters in the past to discuss his protests during the national anthem.

The 25-year-old will cost $1.74 million toward the salary cap this season, which is almost one-tenth of Johnson's cap hit last year.

"The 6'0", 197 pound cornerback is fresh off a season in which he recorded 46 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, 5 interceptions, and 9 passes defensed in 14 starts.

This is the second trade involving a premier player for Kansas City in less than a month.

The Chiefs' move of Marcus Peters coupled with their earlier trade of Alex Smith makes the Broncos' pursuit of Kirk Cousins all the more important.

The Smith era in Kansas City is over, and they are going to be breaking in Patrick Mahomes next season along with a defense that will have many new faces, including Fuller and David Amerson at cornerback.

The Chiefs have been aggressively seeking to trade Peters, an All-Pro during the 2016 season, as part of both a youth movement and shift in locker room culture. The Rams do not have a second-rounder.

Schefter later confirmed the news of the trade, which can not be finalized until March 14, the start of the new league year.
