YouTube Apologizes For Trending Conspiracy Video On Florida Survivor

  • A bizarre Parkland conspiracy video topped YouTube's trending list

That video focused on David Hogg, a strong voice among survivors of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

In the case of the Stoneman Douglas shooting, these fringe outlets have already attempted to link survivors and witnesses to everything from the Democratic Party to billionaire activist George Soros (himself a frequent target of far-right conspiracies), to the Federal Bureau of Investigation itself, signaling an anti-government bias that often lurks beneath these kinds of theories. As with many other aspects of the aftermath of the shooting, the survivors are taking a much more active and visible role than in some past mass shootings (many appeared on CNN just last night in a town hall with representatives from the NRA and Congress), and are refusing to let these conspiracy theorists and trolls get away with using them as props for their own agendas.

As the theories gain momentum through social media, they filter upwards to people with higher profiles, including media columnists, right-wing influencers and, in this case, the USA president's own son. YouTube removed the offending video, titled "David Hogg Can't Remember His Lines In TV Interview", on Wednesday, citing the violation of its policies on harassment and bullying.

According to theorists, this proves Hogg is an actor paid to make media appearances, as opposed to a student at the Florida school.

The term refers to people who are paid to play disaster victims in emergency drills.

"This video should never have appeared in Trending", a YouTube spokesperson told Fox News.

In a statement, YouTube said its system misclassified the video because it "contained footage from an authoritative news source".

The falsely re-captioned video reached #1 on YouTube's trending videos list and stayed there until it was removed from the site, apparently manually rather than systemically. On YouTube, a search for "David Hogg" returns several conspiracy videos. He responded: "I'm not a crisis actor. I'm somebody that had to witness this and live through this, and I continue to have to do that". "People like Donald Trump Jr., the president's least-favorite son, are perpetuating this kind of stuff", Kimmel said in his opening monologue Tuesday.

Trump Jr "Liked" this post on Twitter. This week, Donald Trump Jr. even liked a tweet about the conspiracies.

A USA government worker has been sacked after pushing the same conspiracy theories. "(I guess he transferred?)", Kelly said to the Tampa Bay Times.

"Both kids in the picture are not students here but actors that travel to various crisis when they happen", he wrote. The video was originally posted last August.

After Kelly's emails went viral, Rep. Harrison released a statement saying he's placed Kelly on leave, adding that he doesn't share his views. Following the tragic shooting that left 17 dead, he's helped spearhead a student-led campaign for gun control reform.

It goes without saying that pushing a insane conspiracy theory for your own gains in the wake of a tragedy is devoid of humanity.
