  • France's Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron are among favourites for the ice dance figure skating competition which opens Monday at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics

The 2018 Winter Olympic gold medalists in ice dancing - and most-decorated figure skaters in Olympic history - put on quite a show during their PyeongChang appearance, executing flawless versions of a passionate Moulin Rouge medley for their free skate and a dramatic Latin short program.

For Virtue and Moir, this was a record fifth medal to go with their Vancouver gold and the silvers they won in the team and ice dance at Sochi, and gold in last week's team event in Pyeongchang.

They briefly retired after Sochi, but decided a few years ago to compete in one more Olympics.

"That's the amusing thing about the Olympics: if you do the work right you've gained all that stuff in your personal life before you even come to the Olympics", Moir said.

We love working together. "Would you guys just give us a little 411 on that situation?"

"She's actually hilarious. I think some people would be surprised", said Moir. "This is the moment we have dreamed about", wrote Tessa, 28, on social media before thanking fans and Canada for their unwavering support.

"That was so special to us and we're going to return that favour", he said.

Before they pop the champagne, the pair will do all they can to connect with their fans back home.

"Hopefully, we can catch even one kid who is waking up before school tomorrow so he can see us with the medal and get inspired".

"We have such respect especially for Gabriella and Guillaume".

Also Tuesday, the United States men's hockey team advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5-1 win over Slovakia, and Canadian skier Cassie Sharpe won gold in the women's freestyle halfpipe.

They made a comeback late in 2016 and powered to a number of world records with only one defeat along the way.

They entered the final portion of the competition up by nearly two points on the French pair of Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron. Papadakis fell into Cizeron's arms crying before they left the ice.

The Canadian pair started skating together when Virtue was seven and Moir was nine, according to the official PyeongChang website.

"We're grateful for the legends that came before us, they really paved the way".

Regardless of whether they hang up their competitive skates or not, Tessa and Scott's legacy will never melt away.

"To do that in our first Olympics is really something that we're proud of". They jumped just ahead of American teammates Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donahue, who finished fourth.

"I am so proud of what we accomplished", Maia told reporters.

The magic between the two is equally present on and off the ice.
