The United Nations has been expressing concern over the situation in this area, calling for enabling humanitarian aid deliveries.

Mrs May said she was "appalled by the escalation of air strikes in Eastern Ghouta and deeply concerned by reports of the ongoing deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, in blatant violation of worldwide humanitarian and human rights law".

Doctors said medics were working round the clock treating hundreds of injured people.

As the death toll from the airstrikes escalated sharply, Guterres said life for the 400,000 civilians of Eastern Ghouta had become "hell on earth".

"The recent escalation of violence compounds an already precarious humanitarian situation for the 393,000 residents of East Ghouta, many of them internally displaced, and which account for 94 percent of all Syrians living under besiegement today", Moumtzis said.

"Where is the global community, where is (the UN) Security Council... they abandoned us".

The rebel-held Eastern Ghouta in the countryside of Syrian capital Damascus has witnessed intense airstrikes and shelling as military showdown is approaching.

Eastern Ghouta is mostly held by two hardline rebel groups - Jaish al-Islam and Faylaq al-Rahman - though jihadists have a smaller foothold. The conflict has pitted Assad's government and its allies - including Iran and Russian Federation - against a coalition of opposition Arab fighters that include Sunni Muslims, Kurds and other Syrian minority groups.

"The Syrian government is attacking all areas with all kinds of weapons - known and unknown weapons", Siraj Mahmoud, head of media for the White Helmets civil defense rescue force, which operates in rebel-held areas in Syria, told ABC News. All parties in the Syrian Civil War besides Islamist terrorist groups such as Daesh and the Al-Nusra Front have consented to the center's creation, including the U.S. and its Syrian and Kurdish allies.

"We are able to maintain supply lines of some basic medical essentials to the facilities we support, and we are also providing ad-hoc medical donations to facilities we do not regularly support when they are in dire need".

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has claimed that some 250 people have been killed in Eastern Ghouta in two days of the Syrian government's Russian-backed aerial operations against the terrorists.

The catastrophe in eastern Ghouta is unfolding as the war in Syria enters a new and even more risky phase.

"What is happening in Damascus and Eastern Ghouta is complete madness", said Sedky.

The push for a vote came after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a halt of the "war activities" in Eastern Ghouta, Syria's rebel enclave which has come under a fierce bombing campaign by government forces.

Since Monday, some hospitals have been bombed in eastern Ghouta.
