  • Samsung shares take a hit as iPhone X sales slump

It's just not the way we thought back when the iPhone X launched. The anniversary model might have sold well during the holiday quarter, but most people who wanted to buy the iPhone X have already purchased it.

The industry tracker said there was robust demand for the iPhone X, though global iPhone volumes have been on the decline on an annual basis for five of the past eight quarters. This week, Nikkei reported that Samsung is now set to make 20 million displays for the iPhone X, but that number could end up falling. The initial goal was to supply panels for 45 million to 50 million iPhones.

With the wider adoption of the full-screen design, Samsung Display, which dominates more than 95 percent of the mobile OLED market, plans to further improve profitability overall and widen the gap with fast-growing Chinese runner-ups.

According to the same source, the company has yet to decide its production target for the April-June period, but a further reduction is expected. The reason is Apple's decision to reduce production of its iPhone X model. On a facility that Samsung Display had dedicated to producing panels exclusively for Apple's use, it could see production rates drop to half or less.

The Samsung group unit is looking to offset the impact by securing more orders from Chinese and other customers.

Samsung Display is extending its marquee full-screen display design to mid-range smartphones as part of efforts to further improve profitability, according to industry sources on February 20.

Anticipating strong demand from Apple, Samsung Display had made a capital investment of $12.6 billion last year, which resulted in $1.4 billion jump in depreciation costs in the current year.
