Apple Park employees reportedly smacking into new headquarters' glass walls

  • Apple got a painful reminder that design and safety aren’t friends

No word on whether Apple's much shorter spaceship office suffers from similar issues.

"While it is a technical marvel to make glass at this scale, that's not the achievement", Ive said in an interview with Wired Magazine. According to Marketwatch, at least two suffered cuts to their heads and required treatment by emergency services. Employees are not allowed to discuss anything related to Apple with outsiders.

If you're planning on heading to Apple's new headquarters in Silicon Valley, you may want to look up from your iPhone every once in a while, not just to make sure you see the pretty architecture, but to make sure you don't run into it. I don't expect the people designing cutting-edge hardware and software to be walking into glass walls; that's the kind of behavior I expect from birds. The execution has reportedly gone so well that engineers are running right into the state-of-the-art glass that shapes the building.

But after the Apple Park campus opened earlier this year, the technology giant has discovered one downside to its obsession with stylish aesthetics.

In an effort to curb cranial collisions, unidentified company employees took to placing Post-It notes on glass walls as a way of warning their colleagues. However, the notes were removed because they detracted from the building's design, the people said. Steve Jobs tasked celebrated British architect Norman Foster to design the company's new headquarters back in 2006 based on his own conception-a giant flawless ring to rule them all, built using giant glass panes, carbon fiber, and ground unicorn carcasses.

Employees, including those injured, haven't spoken publicly about the incident as Apple maintains a tight non-disclosure policy. It's also not clear how many workers have had run-ins with the walls.

KTVU reached out to Apple for a comment and has not yet heard back. In 2012, an 83-year-old woman sued Apple after walking into a see-through door at an Apple Store and breaking her nose. As the story points out, none of the collisions have warranted a post to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
