  • Arnold Schwarzenegger is the latest big name to join the Kung Fury film

Hasselhoff famously made a cameo appearance in Sandberg's original short, and sang the theme song.

This feature-length version of Kung Fury is due to go into production mid-2018, with the project being presented to prospective distributors at the European Film Market, running alongside the Berlin International Film Festival February 15 to 23.

The Hollywood Reporter understands that the Terminator, Predator and Total Recall icon (and former California governor) will play the American president in David Sandberg's action-comedy, set to shoot in Europe and in the US this summer. It had earlier been announced that the film will star Oscar-nominated Michael Fassbender in a pivotal role. It was selected to screen at the 2015 Cannes Directors Fortnight, and eventually gained a cult following.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has joined the cast of Kung Fury, joining Michael Fassbender, David Hasselhoff, and David Sandberg, Variety reported. After the tragic death of a Thundercop sees the group disband, a mysterious villain emerges from the shadows to aid in the Fuhrer's quest to attain the ultimate weapon. David Sandberg will also star and produce the action-comedy under his Laser Unicorns production company.

Filming is expected to be in the United States and Europe over the summer.

Schwarzenegger has been the face of the "Terminator" franchise playing the role of the titular robot assassin. David Katzenberg, Seth Grahame-Smith, Aaron Schmidt, Philip Westgren and Conor McCaughan will produce. Pelle Strandberg is executive producer under Laser Unicorns.

"I think [James] Cameron and Tim [Miller] came up with a concept where they can continue on with the T-800 but make a whole new movie", he explains to Business Insider.
