Though Tensions Escalating, No Signs Israel, Syria Want a New War

  • Israel will ‘teach Iran a lesson it will not forget,’ warns Intelligence Minister

Russian Federation has been supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad with air forces and troops in that country's civil war since 2015.

The F-16 jet was struck over northern Israel on Saturday as it came back after a raid on a Syrian position it blamed for launching an Iranian-made drone across the border.

In the wake of the incursion of an Iranian drone into Israeli airspace Saturday that led to an Israeli military response against targets in Syria, the United States must "military deterrent toward Iranian expansionism" by targeting Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) positions in Syria, an expert on Iran wrote in an op-ed published Monday in the New York Post.

Tehran's involvement in Syria, including the deployment of Iran-backed forces near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, has alarmed Israel.

To demonstrate that the "rules" had not changed, Israel was quick to re-establish its right to strike immediately following the downing of the F-16.

He added, "This event is the first of its kind in tens of years". It is true that Iran is more influent than ever in the region thanks to the Assad regime; and that's why Israel has targeted Assad's forces and the Iranians at the same time.

Iran's political influence over the Assad government is a major worry for Israel, who accuse Tehran of trying to use Syria as a new military base from which it could attack the Jewish state. "For the Iranians, there is nothing better than to test the limits and get away with it, and that's why we should not let them", Tzuriel said.

Soon after the drone entered their airspace, it was shot down by the Israeli Air Force.

Russia views Iran as a strategic partner in Syria, while at the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin is engaged in a regular dialogue with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Hezbollah is a vital proxy that has enabled Iran to keep regional pressure on Israel.

Considering that the Syrian regime is in tatters, Assad is probably more keen on rebuilding his decimated country than on bearing the brunt of Israeli attacks launched in response to Iranian provocations.

The U.S. military weighed in as well. "This work will continue", he said. Israel has said it will press ahead with missions in Syria, where it has launched scores of sorties against suspected arms transfers to Iranian-sponsored Lebanese Hezbollah fighters.

That puts Russian Federation and the U.S. on a possible collision course if a more serious clash flares up between Damascus, backed by its Iranian ally, and Israel. The media, if it were doing its job, would reveal that Israelis have no right to support rebels in the Syrian Civil War by pretending that they are merely defending the right to exist as a model democracy. It was one of more than 100 airstrikes that Israel has carried out in Syria since 2011.

The U.S. policy in Syria has always been vague and often inconsistent.

In January, a US -led coalition unveiled a plan to set up a new border force of 30,000 Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria, raising alarms in the region that the White House may be helping to cement an autonomous Kurdish enclave that could further divide the country. Erdogan, Turkey's dictator, fears that should the Kurds establish a form of independence in northern Syria or Iraq, Turkey's large Kurdish minority adjacent to the Syrian Kurdish area might choose to separate from Turkey and join their brethren in Syria.

"God willing they will see more surprises whenever they try to attack Syria", a Syrian official said, referring to recent IAF strikes in the country.

Brigadier General Hossein Salami on February 10 warned that the guards could unleash "hell" on Israel, and destroy all US bases in the region.

"Assad and Hezbollah are the same, and if there will be an attack against us, we will not be obligated to act only against the source of the attack", he said during an interview on Army Radio.

In an additional worrying sign for Netanyahu, Trump himself gave an interview to the Israeli Israel Hayom daily - which is extremely close to the Israeli leader - in which he said that neither the Israelis nor the Palestinians were necessarily "looking to make peace".
