  • Ice hockey - Slovenia down USA 3-2 in overtime

Since the 1998 Nagano Games, the world's best hockey players meet every four years in the ultimate display of national pride and for global bragging rights.

The Olympics are not new to Crowley, who competed three times in the Winter Games with the US team, starting in 1998 when women's ice hockey became an Olympic event. "We need to be our best and play our best for two weeks to win this tournament", the coach added.

Blaz Gregorc scored early in the third period for Slovenia to cut the America's lead in half.

Kroselj made a handful of quality saves to keep Slovenia in the game, and Zapolski had to do the same in the second period, stopping Urbas on a one-timer with Greenway in the box and the USA on the penalty kill.

"Obviously we are an older group with the National Hockey League dream behind most of us, so being able to play for Team USA is probably the highlight of my career", Kolarik said.

"Our team will play with a lot of passion and pride for the US crest", Kolarik said.

USA coach Tony Granato showed a lot of trust in Greenway by having him center the top line with Ryan Stoa and captain Brian Gionta on his wings.

"It was exciting to get my first, but it would have been much better to get a win tonight", said Greenway, one of four American college players in the USA team.

In Sochi, the U.S. Olympic men's ice hockey team also played Slovenia during the preliminary rounds, and Team USA won 5-1.

What's up with the USA men's team?

The United States could be poised to finally end Canada's run of four straight Olympic gold medals, with Wednesday's game serving as a litmus test for where both teams stand entering the medal round.
