Winter Olympics: Who is Red Gerard?

12 February, 2018, 01:03 | Author: Rachael Silva

Snowboarder Redmond Gerard - more commonly known as simply "Red" - has won the first USA medal in Pyeongchang, taking a gold medal at the Winter Olympics with a stunning comeback win in the men's slopestyle final.

Canada's Max Parrot reacts after completing his run in the men's slopestyle finals at Phoenix Snow Park in Pyeongchang, South Korea on February 11, 2018.

McMorris had an advantage knowing the score he needed to put up in his final run, but the 2014 bronze medalist under-rotated on a jump and crashed, ensuring he couldn't overtake Gerard. Both Gerard and Mack agreed he deserved at least a few more points.

It could have been Marcus Kleveland, the first man to land a quad cork, trying to become the first Norwegian to win an Olympic snowboarding title.

"I was really happy when I saw I came in as first", said Gerard.

Despite his rough start in the final, Gerard paused to pose for photos with fans after his first run, a sign that he was following the advice of his mother, Jen.

South Korea's Lim Hyojun (L), Netherlands' Sjinkie Knegt (C) and Russia's Semen Elistratov take part in the men's 1,500m short track speed skating A final event during the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games on February 10, 2018.

Redmond Gerard won the gold medal with 87.16 points.

"It's frustrating, it's disappointing and I can't really explain the Dutch sweep again", Blondin said.

"I think I was just a little bit nervous (at first)", Gerard said.

"I honestly can not tell you", Gerard said. I remember the whole time waiting, just trying to survive because (I) ruptured (my) spleen and all that and my jaw was just hanging. Canada's Max Parrot and Mark McMorris won silver and bronze with runs of 86.00 and 85.20, respectively.

Regina's Mark McMorris held first place until Parrot surpassed him. He said, oh, whatever, X Games is a bigger deal to me. "I never realized how big this is". Did you see his gold medal-winning Slopestyle run?

The OAR team was put together after a doping scandal cast doubts on whether Russian Federation would be allowed to compete at the Pyeongchang Games, with Medvedeva one of high-profile members of the party.

"I was surprised to make it even to the finals of the Olympics and to get first is above me, I don't even know what's going on to be honest", Gerard told the British Broadcasting Corporation.
