  • Major assault launched against IS in Egypt

On August 5, 2012, the army launched "Eagle 2" operation in North Sinai, following the deaths of 16 police soldiers during an attack on a police station in North Sinai near the Egypt-Israel border crossing Karam Abu Salem.

It said many foreign countries have their eyes set on Sinai, claiming that terrorists carry out attacks in Sinai with "technological backing from intelligence [services] of countries hostile to Egypt".

Sixteen militants have been killed and 34 people arrested in a major security operation, Egypt's military said on Sunday, part of a campaign to crush Islamist insurgents blamed for a string of attacks.

"The air force targeted and destroyed 66 targets used by terrorist elements to hide from air and artillery attacks, and to escape from their bases during raids", the statement said.

"The Salafi Call, like all the Egyptian people, stands behind its army in its war on terrorism, and prays to God to help it [the military] prevent [terrorists] from corrupting the land", the group said in a statement late on Saturday.

In November, Sisi ordered his armed forces chief of staff to restore security in Sinai within three months after militants killed more than 300 worshippers at a mosque.

They added that the dead bodies of the 10 militants have been moved to a hospital in nearby Ismailia province.

Egypt denied this, and Israel declined to comment.

El-Sisi wrote on his official Facebook page that he was following the military operation to eradicate terrorism from Egypt with pride.

And last September Sissi met Netanyahu for the first time in public, the encounter coming ahead of the United Nations General Assembly in NY.

Army spokesman Tamer Al Rifai said the extremists had been killed and detained during a "sweep and raids.in northern and central Sinai". They are blamed for a series of bomb, gun and suicide attacks that have killed hundreds in Egypt.
