Iran, Israel's regional arch-enemy, rejected as "ridiculous" reports that Israel had intercepted an Iranian drone launched from Syria on Saturday, state TV reported.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's alliance of Iran and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah warned Israel new "terrorism" will be met with a "severe and serious response".

Following the serious incident, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said, "I have been warning for some time about the dangers of Iran's military entrenchment in Syria".

"The Secretary-General stresses once again that all concerned in Syria and the region have a responsibility and must abide by worldwide law and relevant Security Council resolutions".

Separately, Iran issued a joint statement alongside the other main allies of the Syrian regime - Russian Federation and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah - denying the allegations regarding the drone. The Iranian Foreign Ministry, though, disputed that description of the drone's downing. The cause of the F-16 crash is being investigated, Conricus said, adding that the IDF has not determined if anti-aircraft fire hit the jet. Many in Israel feared not only that Iran and its allies would entrench themselves near the Israeli border but that Hezbollah had been using the Syrian fighting as a training and that Iran might help the militia upgrade to the use of precision-guided missiles.

Israeli media said the jet crashed in northern Israel.

The Trump regime has backed Israel's hawkish stance on Iran, and has also declared containing Tehran's influence an objective of its Syria policy.

During the operation, Syrian anti-aircraft missiles were fired at the aircraft and the pilots of one of the planes ejected themselves when they recognized that one of the missiles had locked onto their jet.

According to the Israeli military, the confrontation began with the drone entering its airspace before being intercepted by a combat helicopter.

Shlomo Mishal, 55, from Beit Shean in northern Israel, said that he was woken by the sirens at around 4:30 a.m.

He did not say whether the drone was armed or for reconnaissance, but alleged it "was on a military mission sent by Iranian military forces" from an "Iranian base" in the Palmyra area.

Syria said its air defences repelled two Israeli raids on its military bases in the centre of the country, hitting more than one warplane during the first. It was not clear if the jet crashed as a direct result of the Syrian fire.

"The era of Israeli strikes on Syria is over".

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor of the seven-year civil war, said the earlier Israeli raids had targeted several military bases in the east of the central province of Homs. "To cover their crimes in the region, Israeli officials are resorting to lies against other countries".

In Litvak's view, the Iranians are intent on continuing to establish military bases in Syria.

"Israel holds Iran and its Syrian hosts responsible for today's aggression".

Iran dismissed Israel's claims that Israeli forces downed one of its drones and that Iran was involved in an attack.

The statement vowed a "relentless response" to "all further aggression".

The Israeli aircraft that targeted the Iranian drone's mobile command center pursued and destroyed the target while it was moving, Bar said.

Hezbollah said on Saturday the "brave confrontation of the aggressing Israeli planes", including downing an F-16, ushers in a "new strategic phase" that puts an end to the violation of Syrian airspace and territories. "This morning Iran brazenly violated Israel's sovereignty", he said.
