  • Aaron Finch and D'Arcy Short celebrate winning the third Twenty20 match

Now it was the turn of the Twenty20 side to throw a winning position away, England losing six wickets for 33 in eight overs on Wednesday to turn a formidable position in their first tri-series match into a losing one.

Stanklake finished with two wickets and Kane Richardson three as England failed to curtail its desire to hit out at all costs, a strategy which brought them undone with the under par total.

Buttler produced the top-score of the match but laboured for his 46, while the likes of D'Arcy Short, Chris Lynn and Glenn Maxwell all batted with unfettered freedom in a speedy chase.

Maxwell and Short combined for 39 off consecutive overs from Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid to end any hopes of an England comeback.

After beating England by 5 wickets in Hobart and drowning New Zealand in the series opener, Australia once again trounced the Poms by 7 wickets in Melbourne on Saturday. This time he lasted just four balls, nicking a David Willey outswinger on two.

Warner is the only member of the Test side to have played for Australia in every format this summer and has struggled for form in the ODIs and T20s.

A nightmare start, meanwhile, to the fourth one-day worldwide in Adelaide last month, when they lost five for eight, then cost them their chance of inflicting a 5-0 drubbing on Australia.

England captain Eoin Morgan doubtful for New Zealand clash due to groin injury

Even Buttler, the Englishman most capable of destroying any opponent, was subdued while top scoring, scoring at fewer than a run a ball before he holed out off the final delivery to put the seal on an under-whelming batting performance. "We never really felt like we had enough (runs)".

James Vince - 5/10 - After England struggled early on, Vince started to consolidate the innings before bwing clean bowled by Andrew Tye for 21 from 21 balls.

Australia, too, did not have a good start.

To make matters worse, Dawid Malan ran himself out for a mere 10 runs, leaving England in trouble at 34 for 3.

Billings struck the only six of England's innings when he smashed Ashton Agar over long-on in the 14th over, but he fell to Stanlake, with Warner taking the first of two catches at mid-off.

England played without regular skipper Eoin Morgan, who strained his right groin during training and was replaced by James Vince.
