Motherboard looked more into how the iOS source code was leaked.

According to Motherboard, the intern who stole the code took it and distributed it to a small group of five friends in the iOS jailbreaking community in order to help them with their ongoing efforts to circumvent Apple's locked down mobile operating system.

A version of the apple code that allows iOS devices like iPhones and iPads to boot-up has been leaked on the web-based hosting service GitHub.

Jonathan Levin, the author of a series of books on iOS and Mac OSX internals, called the leak "huge", speculating the code is now making rounds in the underground iOS jailbreaking community.

Do you think it is still safe despite the iPhone Source Code leak?

Shortly after that article was posted, the publication updated its report to say that Apple had sent GitHub a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown notice demanding removal of the source code link. It also highlighted the fact that it was from iOS 9, which is now several versions old. According to Ars Technica, if someone found a vulnerability in the iBoot code, they could "theoretically" break the security check and upload malware or emulate iOS on other devices. There weren't any plans to widely share the information initially, but was naturally spread later on.

It wasn't just iBoot's code, however. Still, the code that was leaked can't be compiled since bits of it are missing. It's unclear at this stage what that might have been. Apple itself seems unconcerned about the potential security issues, with the company noting in a statement that the code is already three years old and that "the security of our products doesn't depend on the secrecy of our source code".

Apple, for its part, continues to downplay the severity of the current leak.

Nonetheless there are concerns among some that the code could be "weaponized" by people with nefarious intent.

The new iOS leak isn't even that new, The Register noted today, as it's been "quietly doing the rounds between security researchers and device jailbreakers on Reddit for four or so months, if not longer".
