"This year is not a pandemic, but the high ILI is a sign of the severity of this year's flu season", said Anne Schuchat, MD, the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The study looked at the number of deaths attributed to flu in the United States and Mexico between 1997 and 2014, and cross-referenced date of birth.

The CDC said 10 more children died from flu-related causes last week.

As with the previous week, 48 states reported widespread ILI activity, with only OR and Hawaii reporting regional activity.

"I wish that there were better news this week, but nearly everything we're looking at is bad news", Dr. Anne Schuchat, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters on a press call.

Mahan also says that if they have many confirmed cases, they will even go so far as to prevent visitors from bringing any outside food into the facility in order to keep the elderly safe from other peoples' germs.

The latest statistics showed that the share of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness - defined as fever of 100 degrees or higher coupled with a cough, sore throat, or both - was 7.65 percent for the week ending February 3. Officials say it's the highest rate of hospitalization for this point of the season in recent flu outbreaks.

This year's nationwide severe flu season has been blamed on strains of the Type A virus, particularly H3N2 for which the flu vaccine has not been a good match.

"In people who are between the ages of 40 and 49, born after the 1968 pandemic, we've noticed preliminary data suggesting a lower susceptibility to H3N2 and higher to H1N1", Gagnon said.

"One man who we vaccinated came a week or so later and tested positive for influenza - a different strain", Onofre said.

In the weekly report, however, the CDC revealed that levels of H3N2 appear to be dropping. The health department provides the four strain vaccine that protects against influenza A, influenza B, the B/Victoria lineage strain and the B/Yamagata lineage strain. "If you have asthma or other lung diseases, you are at higher risk of developing complications from the flu".

"It's not too late".

But fighting this outbreak is proving to be more hard.

It's a flu season for the ages.

We have several months of flu season remaining. Though this year's vaccine isn't a ideal match for the viruses in circulation, it's still the best way to protect against infection. Be sure to disinfect possibly contaminated surfaces and objects.
