  • NYC’s high school graduation rate hits record high

Each year, the state's Education Department grants the Reward School title to NY schools that have made the most progress or those that have the highest achievements in the state and do not have significant gaps in student achievement between subgroups.

The graduation rate for current English language learners was 26.6 percent, but for students who shed the distinction, the rate exceeded the statewide average, at 84.4 percent. "We're continuing the upward trend in the overall graduation rate by retaining the growth from last year and seeing a slight growth from last year", Elia remarked.

The data also shows the number of students who received each type of diploma and the number of dropouts in each district.

"Our kids are graduating high school and going to college at record rates, while dropping out less than ever before", he added. "At the same time, however, troubling gaps in achievement persist, and we must accelerate the pace of improvement". State education officials say black, Hispanic and white students all made small gains in the four-year graduation rate, but a 20-point gap exists between white students and their minority peers.

New York City posted a 71 percent graduation rate, up from 70 percent a year earlier. She said graduation rates for those students increase with additional time in the classroom. In Chautauqua County, students who are not considered economically disadvantaged graduated resulted in an 89 percent graduation rate, with 47 percent earning a Regents with Advanced Designation, while 75 percent of students who are considered economically disadvantaged graduated with 15 percent of those students earning a Regents with Advanced Designation.

The Rochester City School District released a statement saying that it has achieved its highest graduation rate in more than a decade.

There was no change in the percentage of students who dropped out from 2016 to 2017. The Idaho Distance Education Academy posted the highest rate among virtual schools, at 75.5 percent. "We need to keep improving, redoubling our commitment to our Equity and Excellence for All agenda to ensure that every child gets a high-quality education". The rate climbed to 82.1 percent with the inclusion of August graduates. We will now be able to count previously excluded data on students with commencement credentials and high school equivalency diplomas, along with Advanced Regents diplomas, students who take more than four years to complete, etc. They also posted the highest gain from previous year with a 1.8-point hike.
