Security forces in the Maldives have arrested two Supreme Court judges and an opposition leader hours after President Abdulla Yameen declared a 15-day state of emergency in the island nation.
The president, in a letter to the court released by his office earlier Monday, said the court order had encroached on the powers of the state and was an "infringement of national security and public interest".
Lawmakers from the opposition Maldivian Democratic party have signed a resolution asking the government to respect "the rule of law, and implement last Thursday's Supreme Court ruling".
Husnu Al Suood, the president of Maldives Bar Association and a former Attorney general, said: "I just spoke to the Chief Justice and he told me that the gates of the Supreme Court (are) being stormed by the military".
Speaking on national television, President Yameen Abdul Gayoom said the court's actions last week amounted to "an obstruction of the very ability of this state to function".
Nasheed has called for Yameen to be removed from power.
With Maldives in turmoil following a face-off between the government and its Supreme Court, India is expected to follow a standard operating procedure (SOP) that includes keeping the troops in readiness, government sources indicated today. Nasheed also requested the United States to stop all the financial transactions of Maldives regime leaders going through U.S. banks.
