Maldives: Former President, Opposition Call for International Intervention in Political 'Crisis'

  • Maldives President declares state of emergency amid political crisis

Security forces in the Maldives have arrested two Supreme Court judges and an opposition leader hours after President Abdulla Yameen declared a 15-day state of emergency in the island nation.

The president, in a letter to the court released by his office earlier Monday, said the court order had encroached on the powers of the state and was an "infringement of national security and public interest".

Lawmakers from the opposition Maldivian Democratic party have signed a resolution asking the government to respect "the rule of law, and implement last Thursday's Supreme Court ruling".

Husnu Al Suood, the president of Maldives Bar Association and a former Attorney general, said: "I just spoke to the Chief Justice and he told me that the gates of the Supreme Court (are) being stormed by the military".

Speaking on national television, President Yameen Abdul Gayoom said the court's actions last week amounted to "an obstruction of the very ability of this state to function".

Nasheed has called for Yameen to be removed from power.

With Maldives in turmoil following a face-off between the government and its Supreme Court, India is expected to follow a standard operating procedure (SOP) that includes keeping the troops in readiness, government sources indicated today. Nasheed also requested the United States to stop all the financial transactions of Maldives regime leaders going through U.S. banks.

The decree is "unconstitutional and illegal", he said in a statement.

But Geng was ambivalent on taking a stand against Yameen who during his visit here in December signed a number of deals permitting Chinese investments and inked the much criticised Free Trade Agreement, raising hackles in India.

Observers say China faced a similar situation in Sri Lanka when its close ally and the then president Mahinda Rajapaksa was defeated in 2015 elections creating crisis situation for Chinese strategic investments.

"The people of Maldives have a legitimate request to world governments, especially to India and the United States", said Nasheed.

With the tourism industry being central to the economy, Maldives has been experiencing a bout of bad coverage in the past few days and travel advisories being issued from foreign countries.

"The prevailing political developments in Maldives and the resultant law and order situation is a matter of concern for the Government of India". The Maldives has been mired in political unrest since Nasheed was ousted in 2012 and, in a controversial ruling, later sentenced to 13 years in prison on terrorism charges.
