Mahoney, who played Martin Crane, father of Frasier Crane and Niles Crane, on the long-running sitcom, died Sunday in Chicago after a short illness, reports CNN. He was also in the popular films Say Anything and Reality Bites.

Despite his American blue-collar values and attitude on Frasier, Mahoney was actually British, born in Bispham, Blackpool, Lancashire, England in 1940.

One sister, who moved to the Midwest after marrying a US sailor, was responsible for Mahoney's decision to make his life in America.

A couple of years later, in the late 1970s, John Malkovich and Gary Sinise invited Mahoney to join their Steppenwolf Theater Company, where he found success, Rolling Stone says. From there he went on to the film industry.

"It is with our deepest sorrow that we share the news that ensemble member of 39 years John Mahoney passed away".

A latecomer to acting, he began learning his craft on stage aged 40 and won a Tony award for best featured actor in a play in 1986. He had TV audiences fooled for years with his dismissive dialect, and he was nominated for two Emmy Awards for portraying the Crane patriarch.

Mahoney earned legions of fans and a Screen Actors Guild award for his portrayal of the cranky retired detective and army veteran Marty, father of Kelsey Grammer's Frasier.

John appeared in about 30 movies, including five as a voice actor for animated movies Antz and The Iron Giant.

John Mahoney appears on the set of the final episode of "Frasier" in 2004 in Los Angeles.

His manager, Paul Martino, announced the death, but did not provide a cause.

The humble actor Mahoney, once said he misses theatre and wouldn't regret anything if he never came on camera again. At the age of 11, he visited his sister - a war bride living in IL - and returned to Chicago eight years later under his sister's sponsorship, becoming a U.S. citizen in 1959.

The sitcom's casting director, Jeff Greenberg, tweeted: "I've not known a kinder man nor more brilliant actor".
