United States assumptions about China's nuclear development absurd

  • Iran says US nuclear policy brings world 'closer to annihilation'

In a statement Friday, Trump noted "successive United States administrations deferred much-needed modernization of our nuclear weapons, infrastructure and delivery systems" while other nuclear nations "grew their stockpiles".

In his own statement, Trump said the updated strategy develops capabilities so that use of a nuclear weapon is less likely.

Officials say the addition of low-yield weapons will counter Russia's perceived belief that it could use its own low-yield weapons against the United States in a limited "first-use" basis that would provide an advantage to Moscow in a low-level conflict without causing US nuclear retaliation.

The Chinese Defense Ministry today rejected the revision of the nuclear strategy announced by the United States, whose government considered that China is a possible adversary in Asia that can take advantage of its atomic weapons.

Moscow on Saturday denounced the "bellicose" and "anti-Russian" nature of the new United States nuclear policy, warning it would take necessary measures to ensure its own security.

The Pentagon document released on Friday, known as the Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), argues that developing smaller nuclear weapons would challenge that assumption.

US military institutions believe their current nuclear arsenal is too powerful to serve as an effective deterrent to other nuclear powers.

Low-yield nuclear weapons, while still devastating, have a strength of less than 20 kilotons.

Although the review largely focuses on Russian Federation, several sections are dedicated to the lack of transparency in China's nuclear buildup.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed "deep disappointment" at the plan.

The new nuclear policy is significantly more hawkish than the posture adopted by the administration of former President Barack Obama, which sought to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in the US military.

Soon after, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he was "disappointed" by the document for its "confrontational and anti-Russian character", while Iran claimed US policy would bring the world "closer to annihilation".

It is the first time since 2010 that the United States military has outlined its perception of future nuclear threats.
