Pressure grows on South African President Zuma to step down

  • South Africa's ANC to hold talks on Zuma's future

South Africa's Parliament will vote on a motion of no confidence in embattled President Jacob Zuma on February 22, the Parliamentary speaker said Friday, in an escalation of pressure on the leader to resign after a series of scandals.

A beleaguered Zuma is this evening expected to meet with the top six officials of the ANC at his presidential home of Mahlamba Ndlopfu in Pretoria, where his future as the president of the country is expected to be discussed.

Mr Zuma has not said whether he will step down voluntarily before his second term as president ends next year. This also comes just days before Zuma is due to deliver the State of the Nation Address in Parliament.

Zuma's prolonged stay at the Union Buildings is seen by some as detrimental to uniting the party ahead of the crucial 2019 general elections.

Investors associate Zuma's tenure with a period of economic decline, with growth slowing to an average of 1.5 percent a year and unemployment up to 28 percent from around 23 percent when he took office in 2009.

The president has been beset by a series of corruption allegations but denies any wrongdoing.

He has survived several no-confidence votes during his rule thanks to loyal voting by ANC lawmakers, who form a strong parliamentary majority.

Although Mr Zuma retains the support of a faction within the ANC, he no longer holds a top post.

Deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa is set to take over from Zuma, should he step down.

A group of African National Congress members convened under the banner "defend Luthuli House" says President Zuma's removal is a matter of urgency.

Until Zuma was recalled from office, action against state capture would be limited, and talk about eradicating corruption would remain hollow, and somewhat meaningless, FutureSA said.

Opposition leader Julius Malema, a former ANC member, said Mr Zuma had refused to resign at the meeting late on Sunday. This comes as a motion of no confidence hangs over Zuma's head.
