  • BREAKING NEWS: Four people are injured as gunman opens fire from a car in Italy

An Italian man who has been politically active with the anti-migrant Northern League has been arrested in the drive-by shootings that wounded six people.

In Macerata, Interior Minister Marco Minniti said the gunman had been motivated "by racial hatred", and had "a background of right-wing extremism with clear references to fascism and Nazism".

A video posted by the il Resto di Carlino newspaper later showed the suspect with an Italian flag draped over his shoulders being arrested by armed Carabinieri officers in the city centre, near where he apparently fled his vehicle on foot.

Italian police tweeted: "Gunshots in Macerata".

He had taken part in regional elections for the anti-immigration Northern League previous year and reportedly made a fascist salute when he was captured.

A witness told Reuters that the man drove around the city randomly picking out Black men and women on the streets.

The shootings took place just days after the amputated body of a young Italian woman was discovered concealed in two suitcases near Macerata.

Police said the shooter drove around Macerata, which is famed for its outdoor opera festivals, in a black Alfa Romeo auto firing out of his window at migrants in various locations. "The closeness of the two events makes you imagine there could be a connection".

Police are looking into a possible link between the murder and the shooting spree.

It only came to an end once the black Alfa Romeo was blocked, at which point the driver got out donning the Italian flag, made a fascist salute and submitted himself to police without resisting arrest, reports the Ansa news agency. Police said the key suspect is a Nigerian immigrant.

The man arrested had removed some clothing before waiting for police to take him down. The number of victims hasn't been confirmed.

Macerata's mayor has advised citizens to keep inside Saturday while at the same time the suspects remain at-large.

However, reports suggest that at least seven people may have been shot and wounded. Six foreigners were injured in the shooting, one critically.

Residents had been told to stay inside during the shooting and public transport was halted.
