Cabinet votes to advance legalization of slain rabbi's West Bank outpost

  • A Palestinian protester confronts an Israeli soldier during an army search operation in the Palestinian village of Burqa in the occupied West Bank

Jarrar is accused of participating in a recent drive-by shooting attack that killed a Jewish settler near the illegal outpost of Havat Gilad in the occupied West Bank.

The following week, Israeli troops searching for his attackers shot dead what they described as a Palestinian suspect in the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank, about 35 kilometres north of Havat Gilad.

Israeli settlements on the West Bank are illegal under global law as Palestinians regard the territory as part of their future state.

After a week's postponement, the proposal to recognize Havat Gilad as an official community will be brought to a vote at the cabinet meeting today.

In December, Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, breaking with decades of USA policy that the city's status must be decided in peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

On January 9 this year, the Rabbi of Havat Gilad, Raziel Shevach, was shot by a squad of terrorists in his vehicle going home, a heinous crime which a unified front of rightwing politicians and activists, led by Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, have stated must be avenged the Zionist way - by awarding Havat Gilad a permanent status.

Tamimi, who turned 17 in prison last week, was charged with assault and incitement after she slapped and punched two Israeli soldiers in her West Bank village in December. We will not rest until we bring them to justice.

Israeli forces have launched a number of violent raids in the area during the search for 22-year-old suspect Ahmed Jarrar, who remains at large.

At this point the community will have to start jumping through numerous bureaucratic hoops to move forward, but that most important first official threshold has finally been crossed. To those who sanctify death, we will sanctify life.

Over the past month, several Palestinians have been arrested for being suspected of assisting the terrorists who committed the attack, according to the IDF statement.

He said that another policy guideline of the government is to strengthen settlement.

Roberto Valent, an official with the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA, said he was "deeply concerned" by the demolition.

It comes after a senior leader of Hamas said the U.S. decision to add him to its list of global terrorists would not change the Islamist militant group's "positions and policies".
