  • 1 person in custody following Los Angeles school shooting

Preliminary information indicated she was 12, said Steve Zipperman, chief of the Los Angeles Unified School District police force.

This is the third US school shooting in just over a week; a 15-year-old boy in Kentucky killed two and wounded 14 on January 23, the day after a 16-year-old boy wounded one girl in Texas.

All four are listed in stable condition.

A report via ktla told of the female student being struck in the wrist with the boy struck in the head.

Several students were taken out of classrooms and searched by police during the campus lockdown.

Students at a Los Angeles middle school have been reunited with their parents after a shooting that left a teen critically wounded and three other children injured. Shortly after, a 15-year-old boy opened fire at a Kentucky high school, killing two students and wounding 18 other people.

Two students at Salvador Castro Middle School in the Westlake area were shot at around 8:53 a.m. on Thursday while in a classroom, according to various news reports.

The reported location of the shooting was a middle school classroom at the campus shared by Belmont High School and Sal Castro Middle school, NBC Los Angeles reported. Officer Madison said that the motive was unknown.

The two students who were shot are expected to survive, Sgt. Julie Spry, a Los Angeles School Police Department spokesperson, confirmed to CBS Los Angeles.

Officials initially said they had the suspect, a female student, in custody; however, the student is now described as a person of interest. "They thought it was a fake gun", he said.

Aerial footage broadcast on local television showed a girl being escorted out of the school in handcuffs.

"Someone chose to bring a gun, I guess someone was accidentally playing around with it", said a 12-year-old seventh-grader, according to the Times.

The classroom shooting is the latest USA gun violence at schools, following a high school shooting in the US state of Kentucky on January 23.

Robert Arcos, of the Operations-Central Bureau at Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), said. There is so far no immediate threat to his life, doctors said at a news conference.
