  • Punxsutawney Phil Season Prediction Winter Shadow Pennsylvania

"I see my royal shadow; six more weeks of winter to go", said Phil, through his groundhog-ese interpreter.

If it is sunny, he will see his shadow and retreat back inside - and winter will linger on for another six weeks. But if it doesn't see a shadow, due to overcast skies, then spring will allegedly arrive early. The "official" pronouncement comes from Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog and took place at about 7:30 a.m. EST (1230 GMT) at Gobbler's Knob, just outside Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

The town's annual Groundhog Day event, made more popular by the 1993 comedy film Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray, draws people from as far away as Australia and Russian Federation.

On Feb. 2, the halfway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox, Germans turned to badgers to predict the future of the weather.

Aaron DeNu told The Washington Post newspaper that every year his groundhog predicts "six more weeks of political gridlock...and so far, he's always been right".

For the 131st year, Punxsutawney Phil made his famous prognostication and, once again, science disagrees.

Staten Island Chuck informed residents of NY that there would be an early spring.

Flipping a coin might be as accurate as Phil. In the past 30 years, Phil is 7-for-30, based on the government's analysis of USA temperature data. He has seen his shadow 103 times compared to not seeing his shadow 18 times.

Every February 2, all eyes turn to a small central Pennsylvania borough as winter-weary Northeasterners await weather guidance from the predictive rodent.

Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his hole early this morning and spotted the shadow that portends ill weather till mid-March. So needless to say, Phil has some work to do in the accuracy department.

And of course, who could forget Columbia Pictures' "Groundhog Day", starring Bill Murray.

This tradition started in Europe as Candlemas Day, an early Christian holiday involving candles.

Last year, for instance, skies were overcast with light snow falling.
