  • Ammo seller to Las Vegas shooter charged

Haig was charged on Friday with illegally manufacturing and selling armor-piercing bullets, according to court records.

A criminal complaint says Douglas Haig's fingerprints were found on unfired armor-piercing bullets inside the hotel room where Stephen Paddock launched the attack October 1.

Haig said Paddock was well-dressed, polite, and did not raise any suspicions when he purchased ammuniations rounds from him. Stephen Paddock, the Las Vegas gunman, is believed to have purchased those bullets from Haig. He did not have the license required to make such bullets and thus charges were brought forward. The ammunition found at the scene was unfired, and it's unclear if any of it was used in the attack.

One of his lawyers, Marc Victor, said that Mr. Haig, "to the best of his knowledge, has never sold ammunition to anybody who has ever used it for any unlawful objective whatsoever".

But after the initial reports about Haig in Newsweek and the Review-Journal, Haig told the Las Vegas outlet, "I'm the guy that sold ammunition to Stephen Paddock".

"I had no way to see into his mind", he said.

A phone message left for Haig's attorney, Marc Victor, wasn't immediately returned.

While Haig does not have a license to manufacture armor-piercing ammunition, he had a website where he sold specialized military ammunition, including armor piercing ammo, according to the criminal complaint. A forensic analysis of those two bullets had tool marks consistent with the equipment in Haig's backyard workshop, according to the complaint.

During an October 19 search of Haig's home in Mesa, agents seized live ammunition that they identified as armor-piercing. "It's been not a lot of fun quite frankly".

Haig was released after a court appearance on Friday.

He faces the maximum penalty of five years in prison, and possibly a $250,000 fine, if convicted. A box of unfired ammunition also had a shipping label that had Haig's name and address on it.

Haig initially met Paddock at a gun show in Las Vegas, and the sale of 720 bullets took place at the dealer's house on September 19.

He didn't have the quantity of tracer ammunition on hand that Paddock was seeking, so Paddock contacted him several days later and lined up a sale at Haig's home.

Haig was not aware of what happened in Las Vegas until agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the BATF told him 11 hours after the events unfolded.

He also said that Paddock didn't seem suspicious when they met in person - and the transaction was completely legal.

"I was shocked that my name was the only one that was not redacted", he said.

But there was no evidence the tracer rounds were used during the attack, according to the sources, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about such details.

Weeks later, Paddock would kill 58 people.

He gave the box to Paddock to carry the 720 rounds of tracer ammunition from the sale.

"He said he was going to go put on a light show".
