Although EA is keen to bring back microtransactions in Battlefront II they want to make sure that it is done right to avoid upsetting the fan base as much as they did when the game first released.

In EA's quarterly earnings conference call there were various statements from Chief Executive Officer Andrew Wilson and Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen about Disney, fake news, loot-boxes and microtransactions... including the latter two items not being a form of gambling.

Many of you will know that Battlefront 2 had a rough launch mainly due to the addition of annoying loot boxes and a controversial pay-to-win system in the online multiplayer mode.

The weakness of Battlefront II resulted in an 18 percent year on year Q3 decline in Packed Goods revenue to $380 million. "We'll grow in esports with competitions and broadcast content reaching more players and viewers, and continue to deliver for players through our live services - including Star Wars Battlefront II - with more great content for the games they love". The sales fell short of expectations (10 million) and also means the company sold fewer copies then the 2015 Battlefront reboot in the same period of time (13 million). This is consistent with previous comments from Dice General Manager Oskar Gabrielson, who said "the ability to purchase crystals in-game will become available at a later date, only after we've made changes".

In his 6/10 review, our own Brett Phipps wrote: "Star Wars Battlefront 2 is a great game spoiled by a bad business model".

At present, the only future Star Wars game on the release calendar is the action game in development at Respawn.

EA has confirmed the high-profile sequel sold 9 million copies from November 12 until December 31, when it had expected to shift up to 12 million copies.

Wilson went on to say that EA has a "tremendous relationship with Disney" and they "have been very proactive in that relationship in service of the players". At a point where we [decide] we have the right model for our players and our global community, I have no doubt we will get the support of Disney.
