Russians will target U.S. polls, Central Intelligence Agency chief Mike Pompeo warns

  • The director of the CIA expects Russia will try to meddle in the 2018 midterm elections

Democrats say they are trying to protect the country's democratic processes from a foreign enemy.

But the former Kansas congressman is confident that "America will be able to have a free and fair election [and] that we will push back in a way that is sufficiently robust".

"I wanted to send a clear message to Qasem Soleimani that there are American interests - there are Western interests, British interests and others - and an attack on those will be met with an equal response".

Pompeo also warned that China poses an equal threat to Russian Federation, especially in its cyberwarfare capabilities.

"I have every expectation that they will continue to try and do that", Pompeo said when asked whether he anticipated a Russian influence campaign later this year during an interview with BBC Monday.

He then brought up the efforts put to get hold of United States commercial information and access to hospitals and schools, efforts which reached the UK and Europe.

Russian Federation is accused of meddling in the 2016 US presidential election and Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the allegations, which Moscow denies, and if there was any collusion involving US President Donald Trump's associates.

"We can watch very focused efforts to steal American information, to infiltrate the United States with spies - with people who are going to work on behalf of the Chinese government against America". "The Chinese have a much bigger footprint upon which to execute that mission [of trying to exert influence over the USA and Western Europe] than the Russians do". "We have to do better at pushing back against Chinese efforts to covertly influence the world".

Pompeo struck a combative tone in the interview, setting out his vision for the Central Intelligence Agency under President Trump.

Pompeo also expressed concern that North Korea would have the capability to strike the USA with nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles "in a handful of months".

"The claim that the president isn't engaged and doesn't have a grasp on these important issues is unsafe and false, and it saddens me that someone would have taken the time to write such drivel", he said.

President Trump himself has been reluctant to acknowledge the Kremlin's interference in the 2016 election. "Whatever the facts may be, we deliver them unvarnished as accurately and forcefully we can".
