NCAA president Mark Emmert was reportedly notified in November 2010 of 37 complaints of sexual assault committed by Michigan State athletes.

The NCAA announced plans to open an investigation into Michigan State on Tuesday.

Redmond told The Athletic that Emmert invited her to Indianapolis where she pushed for initiatives, possible sanctions and other ways for the NCAA to assert itself against sexual violence.

The fallout from Nassar - the disgraced ex-Michigan State and USA Gymnastics doctor with a sentence of up to 175 years - continues. Emmert was unavailable for comment to The Athletic on Friday afternoon. But the governing board has an terrible lot of power.

The coalition letter, dated November 17, 2010, and also provided to the AP, detailed what the group described as a "growing epidemic" of sexual assaults by male athletes against women, and used "recent reports" of sexual violence involving two Michigan State basketball players as an example.

In an interview with The Athletic, Redmond said she found Emmert, 65, receptive to her concerns, meeting with her for 90 minutes.

Emmert also noted that Redmond never mentioned Nassar in their communications. The letter also referenced an "earlier report of similar violence" involving Michigan State basketball players and "37 reports of sexual assault by MSU athletes" that had been reported in the previous two years.

NCAA president Mark Emmert could be facing some tough questions soon regarding recent allegations on Michigan State's football and men's basketball programs. The report discovered a "pattern of widespread denial, inaction and information suppression" of sexual assault allegations.

"What I really got from the experience with Mark Emmert was that governing body governs him", Redmond said. There were on-campus protests when it became clear that both athletes would remain in school and on the basketball team with no punishment from the school or athletic department. The university's athletic department has been in headlines for its mishandling of the Larry Nassar case; Nassar was a faculty member at the university for decades and sexually abused multiple students under the guise of medical treatment during his time there.
