KB4078130 disables the latest Spectre updates on Windows 7, 8.1, 10

A week ago the company said that it had isolated the root cause of reboots, at least for Haswell and Broadwell processors, and that it would soon begin testing a new version.

In its announcement of the update that disables the Spectre patch, Microsoft urged users to stay informed about the status of a patch for Spectre.

"Our own experience is that system instability [caused by the Intel patch] can in some circumstances cause data loss or corruption", a Microsoft support note explains.

The problematic Intel fix was created to mitigate against attacks using the Spectre-related Branch Target Injection vulnerability, CVE 2017-5715.

The update was made available to those who had installed the Intel patch on Windows 7 (Service Pack 1 or higher), Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 (all versions), on both client and server. Over the weekend, it issued an out-of-band security update to address this problem. Those instructions offer IT administrators the keys which, when added to the Windows registry, enable or disable the mitigations.

So far, 2017 was not great of years for Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) due to the disclosure of information regarding security flaws found in its hardware.

It's the latest development in the rocky recovery process from the design flaw called Spectre. This has raised concern as Intel's actions could have allowed the Chinese government to exploit the vulnerabilities to gather data before the patches were released.

Intel is "working around the clock to ensure we are addressing these issues", Navin Shenoy, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Data Center Group, said in an update last week. Intel denied this, saying performance would vary depending on workloads.

On the official patch notes, Microsoft informs that the decision to deploy KB4078130 was taken following Intel's recommendations. For the full list of devices, see Intel's microcode revision guidance.

Intel CEO Bryan Kraznich recently said the chipmaker is working on a new design for processors that would incorporate "silicon-based changes" to mitigate the threat posed by the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities.

Lenovo was quick out the gate on January 3 with a statement advising customers about the vulnerabilities because of work it had done "ahead of that date with industry processor and operating system partners".
